A lot of MapleStory private servers have (to my knowledge) a history of being grossly insecure on the server end. The files containing a virus is one concern, but not the only concern we should be discussing. They usually ask you to make their clients an exception to whatever program you're using and call it a "false-positive". I don't think any active server gets by this. They're changed not to become a virus, but instead with the intent of directing you to their private server and away from Nexon's. While most private servers do get flagged by anti-virus software as malicious, this is likely because playing a MapleStory private server in a lot of scenarios requires the modification of the official MapleStory files when not using a redirector.
They very well could be ran by a handful of kids pretending to be Nexon with no real obligation to keep you safe. And even then, I find it hard to trust any private server wholeheartedly. Due to the nature of private servers, it is difficult to be sure without some investigation. But if you wish to take preventative measures for the sake of security, that wouldn't be a bad idea either.
